Procrastination!

Hi Everyone!
So I'm supposed to be working from home today but can't seem to get focused on actual work.  So what did I do?  Made more laundry detergent!  Last time, I made a HUGE batch of liquid detergent..which worked like a dream, however, took up a crazy amount of space (of which I do not have a lot of "extra") AND took a LOOOONG time...I think it was 3 days that it sat on my stove before I finally got it to the consistency I liked.  Soooo, after rereading a couple of the comments from that post, I decided to try the dry stuff this time.  I used the exact same ingredients (1 bar soap to 1 C borax to 1 C washing soda), but this time just left out the water.

I started using my trusty hand held grater:

But then my arm got tired.  So I pulled out my handy dandy food processor and literally....zzziiiip..and it was done!

Then I just added the borax and washing soda right to the zipper and zhuzhed it a coupe of times:

And voila!  It looks JUST like the stuff from the store and for PENNIES per load!

After seeing how fast the process went using the zipper (i.e., food processor)...I decided to make a 2nd batch and see how fast it really is....4 minutes people!  4 minutes to made laundry soap (which means I actually have plenty of time to get some work done...damn!)  I'm storing it in an airtight container from Ikea so it doesn't get sticky, since our laundry room tends to get a little humid.

Most of the posts I've read about this kind of homemade soap say they use around 1-1.5 T of soap per load, depending on how dirty the clothes are...I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh..and I'm sure your dying to see (haha)....like I promised...here are my nails on day 9:

A little bit of grow out at the bottom (my nails tend to grow pretty fast) but NOOO Chips!!!!  Yippee!!

Happy Thursday...I can see the weekend from here..can you???

Unexpected Time!

Happy Sunday, Everyone!!
Found out last minute yesterday morning that our baseball games were cancelled because of crummy field conditions (due to the crazy rain!) so all of the sudden we had a WHOLE DAY with NO PLANS!!  Yipee!!! What does one do with one's self when you have a whole day and no plans???  This is what I did!!!

1.  Design picture wall and enlist hubby to hang said pictures:

2.  Pull out sewing machine and get busy making the reusable snack bags you've been planning for about 3 months:

a) I used unbleached, cotton (I did NOT use organic because I'm too impatient to wait for the mail..so I went to JoAnn's and used theirs).  I got 2 different weights and then ended up using the utility weight, which is much heavier and I figure will stand up to multiple washings better.
b)  Wash and iron fabric (my very least favorite part of any project).
c) Cut one big 9 1/2 inch strip...I wanted my bags to be just a smidge taller than the little ziplock snack bags...so, with a seam allowance of 1/4 inch, this gives me a finished height of 4 1/2 inches (since you will be folding the fabric in half...you'll see).  Fold and iron the top and bottom (long ways) in about 1/4 inch (make sure the ends fold into each other, since you are essentially making what will be the finished top) like this:

d) Lay one half of your velcro along the top and sew in place along the top edge (along your nice ironed edge) and then the bottom of the velcro:  (I used the soft side of my velcro first)

It's kind of hard to see in this picture but I did leave a little bit of fabric along the side rather than pushing the velro to the very edge..

e.)  Turn your fabric and do the same thing with the bottom edge of fabric and your other ironed end.  Make sure that you are working on the same side of the fabric because in the next step you will fold it in half and you want your velcro to line up so that they are facing eachother!

f).  At this point, you should have one big long strip of fabric with one strip of velcro along the top and one along the bottom.  Now, fold that strip of fabric "backwards" in half..so that the velcro strips meet at the top but are on the OUTSIDE.  Line up so that the short edges meet up (might need to square them up with a rotary cutter) and sew a 1/4 inch seam...

g)  Almost done!  Cut the other end (opposite of the seam you just made)...you can decide how long you want your baggie to be...I cut mine at 6 1/2 inches so that my finished baggie would be 6 inches long (with 1/4 seam allowances on either side).  Line up these edges and sew seam shut! Voila..your lovely little inside out baggie!

h)  Turn the whole little baggie to right side out and your velcro should meet up perfectly!

You can continue, conga-line fashion (heehe) sewing up one side, cutting baggie to desired length and then sewing other side until you run out of "strip" to cut/sew.  I got 4 6 inch baggies plus one smaller one out of one strip of fabric and one yard of velcro.

THEN...I decided to personalize a bit (this was an impulse so, admittedly, my supplies were a little sad)...so I took some old puffy paint, squirted it in a paper plate and painted it flat...while it was still wet, I used an old set of alphabet stamps to stamp on little messages....Next time I do this, I'll maybe get more creative...or at least have a few more colors or stamp options but I really didn't feel like digging through all my old scrapbooking stuff (did we ALL go through a scrapbooking phase??).  Anyway, they turned out like this:

I've been meaning to do this for a while..I HATE using those little plastic ones...I remember watching my Mo wash them out and reuse them when I was a kid so I think it must be genetic.  Anyway, what else did I do??

3.  Used more of those Sally Hanson stickers for my toes (rainbow camouflage this time) and went and got..gasp....a MANICURE!  (I never do that so it felt like a completely indulgent treat).  Ok, so last year I discovered this new kind of manicure called different things, depending on where you live.  I've seen it called "shellac", or "gel" around here.  What they do, is take a special nail polish and basically bake it to your nails using a UV light...I was skeptical at first...but I got one before Thanksgiving last year...and I am NOT KIDDING when I say that it lasted to almost Christmas...it actually lasts as long as your nails take to grow out..so if you get a dark color, the grow out is more noticeable but if you get a light color (or even a french mani), it could last more than a month easily.  I've been craving grey for some reason and, since its my Bday month and we are going to Vegas next weekend, I decided to splurge (it runs between 20-30 bucks a pop!..ouch..BUT like I said...it lasts forever!!!)...so here they are:

I'm going to take a picture each week so you can see how awesome and durable this type of manicure it...love.love.LOVE!!!

Phew..that was kind of a marathon post...but my kids are at CCD and the Teacher is at Lowe's so it's nice and quiet this Sunday morning.

What did you all do this weekend???  What do you like to do when you get some unexpected time to yourselves????

Trash to Treasure!

Good Morning All!
As we were going through my Mo's things last month, we were trying to consolidate all of the pictures she'd accumulated over the course of her life.  She had this gigantic curio cabinet that was stuffed FULL of framed pictures of her family over the years.  We decided to take all the pictures out and are going to send them to their respective members of the family and ended up with a giant pile of frames left over.  Most of them were delegated to the Good-Will pile for donation, but I did snag these beauties:

Now, gold-leaf isn't exactly my style, so in comes a can of spray paint...and voila!
Much better, don't you think??  These are my nieces and an older family pic..aren't they pretty??  I have several more frames and am planning a little collage wall in our hallway.
I love what a simple can of spray paint can do...this one had a primer included and was specifically for metal.  I have another little spray paint project in the works for later!

Happy Hump Day, Everyone!

Oatmeal with Lemons and Blueberries..Oh My!

Happy Monday!
And to make it even happier??  Here is the link to the baked oatmeal recipe I told you about yesterday (which of course I found on Pinterest!)...oh my goodness!
You.Are.Welcome.
Now, I do admit to substituting dried blueberries for fresh (and you don't need a full 2 Cups...more like 1 1/4)...since my kids don't like their fruit "mushy" (and honestly, neither do I).  This was soooo delicious and soooo easy!!!  I made it on Sunday for Monday's breakfast...and we ate it cold, because we are weird like that.  I'm thinking next time I might actually make it in individual muffin tins...of course that would add to the complexity factor so I probably won't.  Here are a couple of pics I snapped...when I remembered..which, unfortunately, was after we had scooped some out...ah well.  I'm off for seconds!!!!

Do you see that crunchy crusty stuff along the outside...best.part!!!  mmmmm

Anyone else have any quick breakfast strategies???

See ya!

Menu Monday..on a Sunday!

Hey There!
My family just returned home from a spring break trip to Pagosa Springs, Colorado.  I grew up in Colorado so to return there and introduce my boys to small town living is really important and special to me!  I'll post pics of our adventures later this week.  In the meantime...here's our menu and shopping list for the week.  I have to preface this with this...unbeknowest to us, the freezer in our garage was somehow unplugged before we left (I'm thinking it happened in the Teacher's rush to make sure that all UNNECESSARY things were unplugged prior to our departure).  This means that our fully stocked freezer was without power for just over a week.  What we came home to was the most disgusting mess of STINK to ever meet your nose.  Therefor, this week...we are going vegetarian...I cannot get the smell of rotten meat out of my nose...I'm afraid I might be ruined for good.  Blech!!! (Don't even get me started on how I feel about all that WASTE...I pride myself on being a cheapskate..ahem, FRUGAL and making the most of everything we buy...so this loss hits me where it hurts...DAMN!)

Ok..here's the menu:

Monday:  Bean and Spinach Soup (in the Slowcooker!!)
Tuesday:  Vegan Chili Verde
Wed:  I admit, this will probably be pizza night since I work late and we have a baseball game!
Thurs:  Lemon Quinoa Cilantro Chickpea Salad (try saying THAT 3 times fast!)
AND...as a bonus...I'm currently in the process of baking a Baked Blueberry Oatmeal for breakfast the next few days..I've never tried a BAKED oatmeal so I'll let you know how it goes!
